Announcing GraphQL Summit by Apollo 2025: Connect Everything. Build Anything.


<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On June 18th, we hosted our very first MCP Server Builder Meetup in San Francisco, bringing together engineers, tinkerers, and early adopters to explore the future of building AI-native developer experiences with Model Context Protocol (MCP).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This was more than just a showcase of cool demos. It marked the launch of a new community of developers building for and with LLMs using MCP servers. The energy in the room made one thing clear: this community is ready to build what&#8217;s next.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Jordan shared how his team turned an internal hack week project into a production-grade MCP server at Square, which now powers real developer workflows.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Key Highlights:</strong></p>

<li>Introduced Goose: an open source, LLM-agnostic tool for running and testing MCP servers locally in a GUI or terminal experience.</li>



<li>Explained Square’s &#8220;layered approach&#8221; (discover → plan → execute) to reduce API confusion. This structured layering helps make results predictable and reproducible.</li>



<li>Goose read a raw .txt file of invoice notes, parsed out customer and payment data, called multiple Square API endpoints (customer create, order create, invoice publish), and emailed real invoice all from a single prompt.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Why it matters:</strong> An impressive real-world example of turning API chaos into structured tool behavior.&nbsp;</p>

<li>MCP Client &amp; Server: Langflow can act as both an MCP client (calling tools via agent workflows) and a server (exposing your flows as tools), letting you chain, compose, and republish.</li>



<li>Multi-agent architecture: She showcased a resume enhancer app that parsed a resume, queried live job market data via Tavily, and returned improvements all orchestrated across multiple agents.</li>



<li>Tool Reuse: Demonstrated turning any Langflow component into a reusable tool and exporting it as part of a server bundle.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Why it matters:</strong> For devs or visual thinkers, Langflow is a developer-friendly launchpad for building composable, LLM-native tools.</p>

<li>Serverless podcast generator: Combined Claude, Workers AI, and a Cloudflare D1 SQL database to build a podcast generator that outputs both audio and script content.</li>



<li>End-to-end deployment: Demonstrated how to go from zero to a deployed MCP server using Cloudflare’s click-to-deploy button. Most code was auto-generated, including durable object support.</li>



<li>Tool listing &amp; persistence: Saved generated podcast metadata and audio URLs to SQL, and exposed a tool to query prior results..</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Why it matters:</strong> Cloudflare’s infra stack is well-suited for lightweight AI applications. If you want a fast way to host, persist, and serve LLM workflows globally, this is a great blueprint.</p>

<li>Hot-reloadable tools: Showed how the <a href="https://www.apollographql.com/docs/apollo-mcp-server">Apollo MCP server</a> can load tools directly from .graphql files with no build step needed.</li>



<li>Live demo: Used Goose to introspect GitHub’s GraphQL schema and auto-generate a working tool in minutes, then hot-loaded it into the server.</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Prior to this effort by the platform team, Intuit&#8217;s flagship product team switched to GraphQL to better accommodate their microservices architecture. As GraphQL’s popularity grew internally, various teams developed specialized GraphQL gateways to address their specific requirements. These gateways proved scalable and resilient, handling Intuit&#8217;s seasonal traffic spikes. However, they sometimes failed to meet industry standards and lacked documentation or accessible knowledge for onboarding or troubleshooting. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Facing challenges with multiple internal gateways, a team of architects at Intuit embarked on a mission to merge subgraph schemas using a unified gateway. They chose <a href="https://www.apollographql.com/docs/federation/">Apollo Federation 2</a> as the specification to merge these subgraph schemas.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By unifying the gateway, Intuit’s team aimed to ensure that clients interacting with their systems would connect to a single endpoint rather than multiple endpoints, aligning with GraphQL&#8217;s fundamental principles. This strategic move prompted the team to consider various factors when creating new <a href="https://www.apollographql.com/docs/federation/#next-steps">supergraphs</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By consolidating to a common GraphQL platform, Intuit could speed up application delivery by promoting better composability and reuse across teams. Rama’s team wanted to make sure teams could share common entities while still avoiding noisy neighbor problems across products during peak usage periods. Additionally, the team grappled with aligning the supergraph structure with functional groups or business units, a vital factor for better internal alignment.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The introduction of <a href="https://www.apollographql.com/docs/graphos/delivery/contracts/">Apollo GraphOS&#8217;s contract feature</a> provided a solution (see figure 2). These contracts enabled them to deliver different subsets of their supergraph to different consumers. The subgraph schemas were tagged during design, creating a complete supergraph schema. Filtering this schema based on tags resulted in multiple contract supergraph schemas that could merge the subgraphs. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This approach enabled effortless modifications in the supergraph structure without requiring extensive changes in publishing or deployment. Moreover, contracts enabled the Intuit team to seamlessly make parts of a single supergraph accessible across multiple contract supergraphs, fostering versatility and adaptability within the system. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Intuit&#8217;s tax season presented a unique challenge, demanding peak scalability and minimal response time variance. While <a href="https://www.apollographql.com/docs/apollo-server/using-federation/apollo-gateway-setup/">Apollo Gateway</a> was Intuit&#8217;s initial choice for its Apollo Federation 2 support and familiarity within internal teams, load testing revealed response time variability under high traffic. After excellent scalability results from benchmarking <a href="https://www.apollographql.com/docs/router/">Apollo Router</a>, Rama and his team decided to use the Apollo Router as the GraphQL orchestration layer.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Phadke joins Apollo GraphQL from Atlassian, where he played a crucial role in unlocking customer success and building its pre-sales &amp; post-sales customer motions as it scaled from a startup to a public market leader worth $62B; he will be responsible for building the post-sales group fostering long-term customer relationships and evolving the customer adoption journey. Brazier most recently joins from Grammarly, where he led their developer platform efforts and, prior to that, was the VP of Product at Twilio, where he focused on Twilio Flex, Voice and Video, and other product lines for the company. He brings his background in platforms, developer-facing products and cloud, alongside experience with top-down and bottom-up sales motions, to further advance all aspects of the Apollo GraphQL product portfolio that is seeing significant adoption as the leader of GraphQL products in the market. Additionally, Robbie Petrie joined as Chief Financial Officer earlier in 2023 from Twilio to round out the leadership team.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Monday was about helping teams level up their GraphQL skills with workshops focused on production best practices, schema design, Apollo Federation, and how to champion the supergraph. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On Tuesday, Matt DeBergalis, CTO at Apollo GraphQL, kicked us off with a keynote announcing Apollo GraphOS and the new features we are launching. (Read on to learn what we launched at GraphQL Summit.) Attendees then split up across the GraphQL Summit pavilion to join compelling sessions from companies like Netflix, Fidelity, Wayfair, and Pinterest.  Marc-André Giroux from Netflix’s talk on Building Great GraphQL Developer Experiences @ Scale was packed with insight on how Netflix helps build solutions to empower 100s of developers to collaborate on their supergraph.  Attendees also raved about the practical advice for protecting your GraphQL API in Nick Aleks and Dolev Farhi’s talk on Offensive GraphQL Security Testing. Sam Scott from Oso’s talk Authorization Patterns in GraphQL and Ash Narcisse from Apollo’s Root of Auth things talks came in with high remarks from attendees. Tuesday&#8217;s closing keynote, How a Supergraph Powers The Front Page of the Internet, was by Reddit’s Savannah Forood and Jameson Williams. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Apollo’s Ben Newman gave Wednesday’s keynote on The Future of Real-time Data with GraphQL, followed by compelling sessions from companies including Stripe, Expedia, Block, and TV2 Denmark. Attendees also called out Max Goodings’ talk, 7 Tips For Writing Better Resolvers, as providing concrete best practices on writing hundreds or thousands of resolvers. Two members of Walmart’s Global Tech team, Aditya Bakle and Ben Wilson, closed GraphQL Summit with the story of how they completely redesigned all of their digital properties using the supergraph in less than a year. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tuesday morning, we introduced Apollo GraphOS, a complete cloud platform that lets anyone build, connect, and scale any supergraph. There are three key components of GraphOS:&nbsp;</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>A global supergraph run-time</strong> that is either hosted by Apollo or Enterprise users can self-host using Apollo Router</li><li><strong>A schema delivery pipeline</strong> that includes a schema registry, observability, and schema validation to prevent downtime</li><li><strong>A supergraph development kit </strong>a set of tools that give you a complete supergraph development environment on your laptop</li></ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">GraphOS delivers advanced capabilities like @defer out of the box. @defer lets you mark slow parts of your query and tell the graph it can deliver those parts asynchronously, allowing teams to build more responsive, faster experiences.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Summit attendees could test out GraphOS at the supergraph stations across the venue.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Our supergraph development kit&nbsp;</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The supergraph development kit is a set of tools that lets you spin up a complete supergraph development environment on your laptop powered by Apollo Router. New Rover templates in popular programming languages allow new teams to onboard to the graph faster, by providing the skeleton for building out subgraphs.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>A peek into supergraph linking</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In Tuesday&#8217;s keynote, Matt previewed supergraph linking. The supergraph is a powerful way to allow independent teams within an organization to collaborate on a shared API. However, when organizations need to build experiences that require capabilities from other companies, this often results in writing tedious wrapping code around 3rd party APIs. The current approach creates a risk of experiences breaking if any underlying APIs change.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Matt showcased our conceptual approach to linking multiple supergraphs that would allow organizations to share capabilities more efficiently. Martijn Walraven went into more depth during his session, The Future of the Supergraph. He discussed how namespacing, dynamic schema composition, and multi-level routing could be used to build supergraph linking.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Real-time data proposal</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For monolithic graphs, subscriptions are the most common approach for providing real-time data to GraphQL clients. However, implementing real-time solutions in federated graphs is challenging. As part of Wednesday&#8217;s opening keynote, Ben Newman, Apollo Open-Source Architect, proposed a real-time data protocol for federated graphs using @live directive and cursor-based query revalidation and diffing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Square started their journey in 2009 with a credit card reader that plugged into the iPhone and iPhone app using a single Ruby on on Rail service. Since then, they have grown into an international company providing a suite of products and platforms to help businesses and individuals participate in the economy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At Square, they strive to provide an exceptional customer experience across the multiple touchpoints their customers may use during the day. To accomplish this, there are cross-functional organizations that consist of hundreds of designers, product managers and engineers. Each build and maintain back-end services that power the features of the front-end applications. In order to fetch the data they need, they have to integrate with services that are owned by different teams.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the past, Square had used a monolithic API service. The API worked well for their front-end engineers but Square has been moving away from monoliths to microservices. With a global, decentralized engineering culture, they realized that a monolithic API was:&nbsp;</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Not scalable: Organizations within the company use different languages of the frameworks. A contributor from one organization would have to learn several new technologies to make changes in a monolith.&nbsp;</li>



<li>Not feasible: Along with the operational overhead being expensive, if the monolithic service went down, this would also bring down the entirety of Square.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lenny began his search for something better and came across GraphQL. He was looking for a flexible solution that would fetch all the data they needed in one request, as well as in a declarative language that was type-safe. He knew he did not want to build another monolithic API service and then discovered Apollo Federation.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With a system that works for both front-end applications and back-end services, Square saw multiple benefits by implementing Apollo Federation and GraphQL, including:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>The ability to reuse the same logic and behavior by making similarly shaped GraphQL requests.</li>



<li>Backend teams declare the capabilities of their own services using smaller GraphQL APIs and the gateway automatically combines them into a unified graph for clients.</li>



<li>Each team builds small GraphQL services that define the graph of data relevant to their own domain and each of the services stands on its own.</li>



<li>They can automate their composition in a continuous integration system. Each time an organization changes their graph, it’s sent to Apollo Studio for validation and composition where it is composed into a Square wide GraphQL schema.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>“Square has a thousand plus engineers in many time zones, all working together to try to create coherent products. Federation makes it easier to run an automated, centralized API service. Which is really fantastic, but it really works well with Apollo schema management tools because that&#8217;s what makes the automation actually possible.”</em></p>
